Message from the Dean

Prof. Golda Obiageri Ekenedo is a Professor of Health Education and Promotion at the University of Port Harcourt, currently on sabbatical placement at Madonna University, Nigeria (Elele campus), in the Department of Public Health. She previously served as Head of the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education at the University of Port Harcourt from 2018 to 2020, and as Head of the Department of Health Promotion, Environmental and Health Education from 2022 to 2024. She is currently the Associate Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at Madonna University, Elele campus.

Prof. Ekenedo is a seasoned researcher with over 90 published articles in reputable local and international refereed journals. She has supervised more than 50 undergraduate projects, over 30 Master’s dissertations, and over 20 Doctoral theses. She has served as Managing Editor for the Journal of Kinetics and Health Education Perspectives (JOKHEP) and the Trends in Educational Studies Journal (TRES-J). Presently, she is the Editor-in-Chief of the African Journal of Human Kinetics, Recreation and Health Studies (AJHKRHS) and a member of the editorial boards of several local and international academic journals.

Her research interests include health needs assessment, health promotion programme design, implementation, and evaluation on various health issues across diverse populations and settings. She is currently developing educational intervention packages for the promotion of HPV screening and prevention.

Prof. Ekenedo earned her B.Sc. in Health and Physical Education in 1989, a Master’s degree in Public Health Education in 1994, and a Ph.D. in Public Health Education in 2007, all from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She was the Best Graduating Student in her department in 1989.

With over 20 years of teaching and research experience, her academic career began as a part-time lecturer at the University of Nigeria from 2004 to 2007. She joined the University of Port Harcourt as a full-time lecturer in 2007 and continues to serve there.

Prof. Ekenedo is an active member of several professional bodies, including the Health Promotion Research Association of Nigeria (HEPRAN), where she served as National Assistant Secretary for six years; the School Health Education Professionals Association of Nigeria (SHEPAN); the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON); and the Nigerian Association of Health Educators (NAHE), where she currently serves as the Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter.

She has attended and presented papers at numerous local and international conferences and workshops.

Candidates Eligible for Madonna University postgraduate Programmes

  1. To qualify for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) programme, applicants should be graduates of Madonna University or any other recognized university or persons who hold qualifications to be equivalent to first degree or holders of recognized Higher National Diploma.
  2. To qualify for admission into a master’s degree programme, applicants should be graduates with a minimum of Second Class Honours degrees.
  3. Applicants for admission into Doctoral Degree programmes should be graduates of Madonna University or any other recognised university, who possess Master’s degrees with a dissertation and an overall average score of at least 60% (B).

Requirements

    1. All applicants should have credit pass at Ordinary Level in five relevant subjects including English Language obtained at not more than two sittings. Candidates with ‘O’ Level examination results before 2016 must possess their certificates and not statement of results or result slips.
    2. NYSC Completion Certificates (Discharge Certificates), Exemption Certificates or Exclusion Certificates is required from all applicants.
    3. Applicants who obtained their first degrees through Remedial Programmes must show evidence of having remedied the relevant subjects for their programmes externally; that is, through WASCE, NECO, and NABTEB.
    4. In addition to other qualifications, applicants are expected to meet the departmental requirements for their programmes.
    5. Candidates should ensure that their official academic transcript(s) and three letters of reference are forwarded under confidential cover to:

          6. Admissions will not normally be offered without transcript(s) and letters of reference.

Duration of Madonna University Postgraduate Programmes

  1. PGD Programme – a minimum of two semesters or a maximum of four semesters.
  2. Master’s degree programme – a minimum period of two semesters or a maximum of six semesters.
  3. PhD Programme – a minimum of six semesters
  4. Our Postgraduate Programmes can be full time or Part time.
