Brief History of the programme

The Department was created by the Senate of Madonna University at its meeting held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the main campus, Elele.

The Senate approval facilitated the invitation to the National Universities Commission which paid a Resource Verification visit to the department and subsequently granted its approval for the university to mount the programme. The department began admissions into the four year, B. Sc degree programme during the 2014/2015 academic session.

Philosophy of the Programme

The philosophy underlying the B. Sc International Relations Degree programme is to produce a flow of competent and confident graduates whose minds are well developed and who are intellectually sound in the field of International Relations, and who can make meaningful contributions to the political and social-economic development of Nigeria, Africa and indeed the entire world.

Rationale/Justification

(i) Compatibility of programme with institution mission

The programme is compatible with the mission of Madonna University as it is aimed at producing highly skilled manpower needed for the economic, political and social growth and development of Nigeria within the comity of nations, without fear or favour and with the moral courage to take the nation out from the grips of corrupt practices.

(ii) Relevance to national needs. National manpower needs in this discipline is not doubt as many more such graduates are needed.

Job Opportunities

Graduates of International Relations can be gainfully employed in the ministry of External Affairs as career diplomats, Ambassadors, or Consuls. They can also be employed by international institutions and organizations at global, regional or sub-regional levels like United Nations, African Union, and Economic Community of West African States. They can also see in the administration departments of International Non Government Organizations (INGOs) and Local Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs). Those that are exceptionally bright can pursue careers in academia as lecturers and could rise up to become professors. By virtue of the training, the international relations graduate has a wide range of job opportunities in the following areas in our national socio-economic and political sectors.

1) Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs

2) Various ministries and parastatals

3) Centres for political and related matters

4) Various international organizations within and outside Nigeria

5) Research organization

Objective

The objectives of the international relations degree programme are to:

i) Stimulate in students an appreciation of international relations theories and other tools of analysis, and application in different contexts at the national and international levels;

ii) Provide students with a broad and balanced knowledge and practical skills in international relations;

iii) Develop in the students the ability to apply their international relations theories, analytical tools, knowledge and skills to the solution of international problems;

iv) Develop in students a range of skills that are relevant to both governmental and non-governmental agencies at home and abroad;

v) Provide students with relevant knowledge and skills for further studies in international relations as a multi-disciplinary field of study; and

vi) Generate in students and appreciation of the importance of international relations in a national political, economic, and social development on the one hand and in the maintenance of global peace and security on the other.

Admission Requirements

UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations)

The minimum admission requirement for International Relations discipline is a pass at credit level in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination or GCE ‘O’ level in five subjects including Mathematics, English language, Government or History and other two subjects. Candidates are also required to have acceptable scores in UTME.

DIRECT ENTRY 

Candidates seeking direct entry admission into the department shall be expected to satisfy the minimum entry requirements of 5-credit level passes (including English, Mathematics and Government or History) in the senior school certificate examination of the WAEC or the general certificate of education or their equivalents. They should also be holders of the National Diploma (at least merit pass), National Certificate in Education (NCE) in relevant courses or two advanced level papers in GCE.

Inter-University Transfers – are accepted into the department for candidates who meet the minimum admission requirements. Such candidates should submit official transcripts of their academic records directly to the University. Admission here is usually into the 200 level classes. Intra University transfers must 

(i) Must meet minimum departmental admission requirements

(ii) Must meet the required GPA requirements as established by the department of International Relations.

Scope of Studies

The curriculum for the B. Sc degree in International Relations covers the foundation courses in the discipline as well in the following stress areas: International Relations Theory, International political economy, international politics, International trade, International law and organizations, foreign policy and diplomacy, peace and conflict, international strategic studies international administration, as well as human rights and Ecology.
