All students of the department are encouraged to register as student members of the ICAN, Accounting Technician Scheme of West Africa (ATSWA). In pursuit of this objective, students are highly exposed to practical accounting environment through the Supervised Industrial Working Experience Scheme, as on the path of making them professional Accountants on/after graduation.
The Programme is structured among other things, to prepare and equip the graduates of the Department for top, middle, and lower managerial position in central, commercial, merchant/investment, Development Banks and also in the numerous microfinance Banks. The graduates of the department could also opt to seek employment in the non-bank financial institutions (such as) Finance Houses, Insurance Companies, National Stock Exchange, Stock Brokerage Firms and Investment outfits), Governments, Statutory Corporations, Industries, Commercial outfits, Consulting firm etc. products of the department are also well equipped to be self-reliant based on the skills and expertise acquired from the in- built entrepreneurial studies curriculum.
To earn a degree in Banking & Finance, all compulsory courses must be taken, and passed. All courses taught during each semester shall be examined at the end of that semester. Candidates will be credited with the number of course units assigned to the course, which they have passed. The total number of units taken with number of courses shall also be recorded for the purpose of computing the cumulative grade point average (CGPA). The continuous assessment has 30 percent of the marks for any course taught. Classes of degree are to be awarded depending on the CGPA obtained.
COURSE LOAD
A student shall be required to register for an approved combination of courses with a minimum of 15 units, and a maximum of 24 units per semester. No student may register for a number of units higher than the approved maximum units unless with the approval of the University Senate.
AWARD OF DEGREES
A student shall qualify for the award of B.Sc degree in Banking & Finance, when he has:
i. Complete and passed prescribed number of units including all compulsory courses specified by the university, and department,
ii. completed and met the standards for all required, and optional courses,
iii. obtained a minimum cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of 1.50, and
iv. Met other requirements that may be specified by the faculty, and the University

The classes of degree to be awarded will depend on the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) obtained. The following classes of degree are approved:

CREDIT UNIT: This varies according to contact hours assigned to each course per week, per semester, and according to work load carried by student.

(a) Credit Load System
In line with NUC minimum credit graduation requirement of 120 units i.e 15 units per semester on average, the Departmental students are expected to complete at least 168 units from year one to four as provided in the course handbook. The entire units are from the general studies, core courses and electives.
(a) Course delivery
Course delivery is by lecture and tutorial. The course in the Department does not lend themselves to practical exposure.
(b) Course evaluation.
The various techniques for valuation include unannounced quizzes, class exams, home work, assignments, and final semester examinations. The weights are 70% for end of semester examinations and 30% for Test & others. Final year students are required to defend their final year project at an oral examination before a panel.
(c) External examination system
The University adopts the system of external examination for the final year students. Normally, the final year (degree) question papers, marking scheme, answer scripts, projects and the over all results are moderated by University appointed competent external examiner.
