APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) IN PUBLIC SERVICE AND GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA FOR SOCIETAL TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT
Abstract
The Application of Artificial intelligence (AI) in Nigeria’s public service and governance has the potential to drive societal technological advancement, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness. This paper examined how Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are reshaping governance structures, decision-making processes and their implementation in Nigeria’s public service frameworks. It explored the current state of AI implementation in Nigeria’s public sector, its potential benefits, challenges, and strategic steps needed to harness AI for improved governance and service delivery. The paper delved into case studies across diverse publications and environmental management, showcasing successful integrations of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It also critically examined governance frameworks needed to regulate Artificial Intelligence itself, emphasising the importance of international collaboration, ethical guidelines, and robust legal structures to address the risks of misuse and inequality in Nigeria’s structure. Moreover, the analysis highlighted the need for capacity building initiatives, stakeholder inclusion and interdisciplinary opportunities to harness Artificial Intelligence (AI’s) transformative power and responsibility. Qualitative research design was applied, and secondary data collection from a review of literature, quotes, books, and articles was used. The findings revealed that AI can automate routine tasks, improve data-driven decision-making- making, and enhance public service delivery. However, challenges such as infrastructure deficits, skill gaps, and data privacy concerns hinder widespread adoption. Recommendations included developing a comprehensive National AI strategy, investing in digital infrastructure, and fostering public-private partnerships to accelerate AI adoption and ensure responsible AI use. The paper concluded by advocating for a balanced approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) in governance that prioritises human dignity, equity, and sustainability while leveraging technological innovation to build resilient and adaptive systems in public service in Nigeria.
