Research is a critical part of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies. All the departments in the faculty are engrossed in research for the students at the undergraduate level, which culminates in their final year defence of originally authored projects.
The Department of Mass Communication extends its research activities to all postgraduate programmes that climax in journal publications, conferences, theses, and dissertations’ presentations.

Mass Communication study in Nigeria has been unbundled to create a distinct discipline of Communications comprising [degree programmes in Journalism and Media Studies, Broadcasting, Information and Media Studies, Advertising, Film and Multimedia, Development Communication Studies, Mass Communication, Public Relations and Strategic Communication].
Therefore, in speedy compliance with the National University Commission’s directives, the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies in Madonna University emerged from the successful unbundling of the Department of Mass Communication in October 2023 following Senate approval. A resource verification exercise was carried out in October 2023, and the brand-new faculty was unveiled in a colourful ceremony on December 12, 2023, at Madonna University Nigeria, Okija Campus.
The four departments approved by the National Universities Commission under the faculty are:
Mass Communication
Broadcasting
Information and Media Studies
Public Relations
It is envisaged that more departments of journalism and media studies, strategic communication, development communication, film and multimedia studies, and advertising will be introduced to the faculty soon.
However, the Department of Mass Communication runs both undergraduate and full postgraduate programmes of Postgraduate Diploma, Master of Science, and Doctorate degrees in Mass Communication.
With the increasing influence of media and the dynamic shifts in global communication trends, there has become an urgent need to institutionalize comprehensive academic and professional training in communication and media within Nigeria. The faculty becomes an answer to that urgent need.
To be a leading centre of excellence in Communication and Media Studies in Nigeria and Africa, fostering innovative research, ethical media practice, and the development of communication professionals equipped to drive societal transformation and democratic development with inbuilt integrity and moral uprightness.
The mission statement underlying the programmes of Communication and Media Studies is to produce graduates imbued with the ability to understand and make contribution to the development of Nigeria and the global community.
Communication and Media Studies have the mission to foster an understanding of the rapidly changing world including issues of globalization and a ‘borderless world’ as well as relationships between various worlds.
This broad objective can be achieved by:
Equipping students with a solid foundation as well as specialized knowledge in a particular discipline
Preparing graduates to meet human resources needs
Fostering in graduates’ entrepreneurial knowledge, the ability to apprehend current changes
Cultivating a sense of public responsibility and a spirit of self-reliance
To provide high-quality education, research, and professional training in communication and media studies, guided by ethical standards and global best practices, to produce graduates who can contribute meaningfully to national and international media landscapes.
Accordingly, the critical objectives of Communication and Media Studies training include to:
Develop the students’ understanding of communicative problems at the various levels of the Nigerian and global society
Inculcate in the students the ability for objective and critical judgment and to observe, understand, analyse and synthesize socio-economic, political and environmental problems using Communication and Media Studies methods and techniques
Create an enabling environment for desirable behaviour change which would help the students to develop values that are in consonance with hard work, probity, commitment, discipline and patriotism
Enable the graduates of Communication and Media Studies to fit into various fields of human endeavour, both in the private and public sectors of the economy, and equip them with entrepreneurial skills and a sense of self-reliance
At the same time, the environment of media and communication education is evolving rapidly to respond to new generations of learners, emerging technology and infrastructure, communication policies and regulations, and the need for more efficient curriculum delivery.
