The Department of Food Science Technology and is in the Faculty of Engineering, within the Madonna University, Elele Campus, Rivers State.
The faculty was introduced with the sole aim of producing effective and efficient graduate engineers.
There has been a shocking revelation by experts in recent times that the major cause of food shortage in Nigeria is food preservation and not food production parse. This is because not less than 60% of food produced in Nigeria is allowed to go waste every year due to microbial spoilage, chemical/biochemical deterioration, insect and rodent infestation and environmental hazards.
Food preservation and processing mob up excess food and thereby ensuring availability of food stuffs at various nooks and crannies of the country all year round. The department of food science and technology, therefore, addresses itself to the problem of providing adequate and healthful food at reasonable prices and, on continuous basis to the Nigeria’s teeming population. Upon successful completion of the programme, the graduates of the department of food science and technology will be employable in diversified food and allied industries which include breweries and bottling companies, flour mills, bakeries, biscuits and confectionery companies, and dairy products and winery. Also, they may be employed in research institutes, relevant federal and state ministries and national agency for food and drug administration and control (NAFDAC). Some may equally seek a career in academic field but by and large, the virtue of their training and orientation will be self-employable.
